The trailers for Alpha and Omega almost scared me away from this movie. The trailers looked like a series of lameness hobbled together to form something resembling a family-friendly film. Lucky for me, you can’t always judge a movie by its trailer. Alpha and Omega turned out to be pretty decent.
Alpha and Omega had the potty jokes kids love to hear, but it wasn’t so bad. There was also some sexual innuendo hidden in there, possibly for the adults who were forced to take children to see this movie. Many jokes fell flat, but overall the storytelling was superb. It wasn’t just the story of Kate and Humphrey trying to get home. A shortage of food created a riff between the Eastern and Western packs of wolves, and there were a lot of politics getting thrown around. There was also a secondary relationship budding between another Alpha and Omega, Garth and Lily. The impending war in Jasper was the major conflict in the movie, and because of that the Kate and Humphrey storyline at times just wasn’t carrying its own weight.

Alpha and Omega had many fun characters. My absolute favorite character in the entire movie is Eve, Kate and Lily’s mother, played by Vicki Lewis. Eve is slightly sociopathic. Nearly everything she said was a violent and graphic threat, that usually involved shoving a part of a wolf’s anatomy down their throats. All the other wolves in both packs tended to react in ways that showed that they thought she was crazy, too. However, Eve is quite a loving mother and wife and just wants to protect her family, like any good Alpha would.

Kate and Humphrey are voiced by Hayden Panetierre and Justin Long. The two had barely had any time apart on screen. Kate and Humphrey are like if The Odd Couple were opposite gendered wolves. Kate is a responsible Alpha, and Humphrey is a goofball Omega. The point that “opposites attract” wasn’t just hammered over your head – it was actually said in the movie. While I liked Humphrey’s fun-loving and sarcastic ways, Kate and Humphrey didn’t carry enough of the main story for me to develop a strong relationship with them. I think the only reason the movie was about them is so the female lead could be a strong character that girls can look up to.
Lily and Garth are played by Christina Ricci and Chris Carmack. The movie pretty much could have been about them, since they also are an Alpha and an Omega, and they actually were involved in the main part of the story. Garth is the Alpha, who’s supposed to marry Kate before she disappears. Lily, who’s an Omega, keeps him company while her sister is gone, and these two develop a relationship. Their relationship actually builds over the course of the movie – they didn’t know each other previously. They also learned a lot from each other, giving them the most character development throughout the film.

Another pair of fun characters in the movie are Marcel and Paddy, a French Canadian goose and an English duck, played by Larry Miller and Eric Price. They argue with each other throughout the whole movie, just like old friends, but they help Kate and Humphrey along on their journey home. They also play golf in their downtime. The constant bickering really is what makes these two characters fun, but without them Kate and Humphrey’s scenes would have dragged on. I only wish there had been more of Marcel and Paddy in the film. They’re the second and third best characters after Eve.
Overall, Alpha and Omega is a great family film. While the trailers for it looked lame, I was pleasantly surprised by the storyline that was easy enough to grasp, but at the same time had layers. While the main characters fell a little flat, it didn’t hurt the overall story. Kids especially will get a kick out of this movie.
