John Pen asked:

The heart pumps blood for good circulation in the body. The circulatory process is called blood pressure. Whenever a person gets excited, afraid, and angry – the blood pressure increases or decreases. Blood pressure is also related to pulse rate. Whenever there is too much or too less blood flow in the body, there comes a deficiency or disease.

Even if one has low blood pressure, one should be alarmed because this is a serious condition. Public Speaking is Like a Dance. The 2 Step

Kerrie Espuga asked:

Public Speaking is Like a Dance: The Two Step? The #1 Question we are always asked: How do I prevent freezing on stage? There are hundreds of approaches to prevent freezing while presenting. The 2 main answers are POSITIVE THINKING and PRACTICE. Public speaking is like a dance because to flow smoothly, following the steps are crucial:

STEP 1: POSITIVE THINKING. We have 60,000 thoughts per day. How many of yours are positive? What percentage of yours is negative and worrisome, tiring out your brain power/energy? Worry=Tired. Period.

We hear the following concerns on a daily basis from people who dread public speaking: What if they don’t see me as an Expert? What if they ask me something I don’t know? What if they judge my knowledge/ability? Will they see me as competent? Oh no, what if they see me as incompetent? What if they think I shouldn’t be the one presenting? What if they can tell I’m nervous? What if they see my hands trembling? What if they outwit me during the Q&A portion of the talk? If I see them whispering, I know they’re talking about me. I dread public speaking.I doubt I can do that well. Maybe I should get someone else to do it. They’ll do it better. Then nobody can judge me. Hopefully they’ll notice I work hard.

These negative thoughts CAUSE the nerves. The answer is to eliminate ALL THE ABOVE thoughts and replace them with positive ones. The audience will respond to your new found confidence. The audience wants me to do well. They want to learn something. Maybe I’ll teach them something they didn’t know. Can’t wait. It’s not the end of the world if they ask me something I don’t know. I know my material. I know my job. I know what I’m doing. I’m going to knock ‘em dead! Okay now that we’ve eliminated the worrisome thoughts and replaced them with positive ones, we can move to the next step in our public speaking journey.

STEP 2: PRACTICE. Ever try practicing your speech in front of a loud TV, while looking at the TV? This secret is a way to practice with distractions (without anyone seeing). Practice in front of a mock audience (perhaps co-workers if they have a similar need). Practicing without feedback is like not practice much at all. This is why this is the 2nd part of the dance?getting opinions before you go on stage. See if the stories work. See if your elements of humor work. See if the audience is engaged. Be open to implementing their feedback. At work, do you take every chance you get to practice speaking in groups? Have you asked your boss if you could present at the next meeting? Ask to present an update on the project you’ve been working on. Have you spoken in the community lately? (Club, association, Chamber of Commerce, etc). We can’t expect to be proficient if we haven’t worked on our proficiency.

Take these two steps and you’re on your way to conquering your fear. Think of fluent speakers who had great impact on you. Chances are they think positively and have practiced a ton. Now you can, too!
